Graphic Design for Business Campaigns: A Practical Briefing Checklist

Learn how to brief a graphic designer for campaign, social, marketing and presentation graphics that stay consistent and work across mobile formats.

Define the audience, message and action

A useful graphic design brief starts with three answers: who should notice the work, what should they understand and what should they do next? Add the channel, dimensions, deadline and any mandatory copy. These details give a designer enough context to make decisions rather than simply place supplied text into a template.

Tell the designer what must be accurate, such as price, dates, product claims and legal wording. Share the brand guide and a few examples of what has worked or failed. Explain why those examples matter instead of asking for a visual copy of a competitor.

Plan for each placement, not one resized file

A presentation cover, social post and website banner have different reading distances and content priorities. Build a small family of related layouts and decide what can change in each one. Keep text legible on a phone and leave room for platform controls, captions and safe areas.

Ask for production-ready exports in the formats the team will actually use, plus editable source files if they are part of the agreed scope. A consistent naming system and short usage note can save more time than a large folder of unlabeled variants.

Graphic design, branding and social design are related but distinct

Graphic design can cover individual marketing assets, campaign systems and presentations. Branding establishes the broader identity rules those assets use, while a social design engagement may add channel-specific templates and a publishing rhythm. Being precise about the need helps a business avoid paying for an unnecessary rebrand when it needs a campaign toolkit—or commissioning isolated artwork when the identity itself is inconsistent.

For a one-off project, agree on the number of concepts, formats and revisions. For ongoing design, decide who supplies copy and photography, how requests are prioritised and how the team will consolidate feedback.

Review quality on the device and in context

Do not approve only from a full-size desktop preview. Open exported files on a phone, check contrast and spelling, and view the design beside the surrounding feed or presentation. Ask a colleague unfamiliar with the brief what the graphic communicates in a few seconds; confusion is a useful signal to simplify.
